Spain vs Ivory Coast LIVE Football Match Score July 31/7/2021
Despite Spain winning up as winners of Group C and Ivory Coast runners-up in Group D, both these two sides finished on five points having drawn two and won one of their three games played respectively. Each found goals hard to come by in the group stage, Spain scoring just twice whilst Ivory Coast netted just three times, the lowest number of goals scored by any country in Group D. This suggests that a very tight encounter is in prospect here with goalmouth action reduced to a minimum. Whilst the outcome itself could go either way, under 2.5 goals scored over 90 minutes has to be favoured.
The Spanish national team brought to Tokyo the strongest squad of all the participants in the football tournament. La Roja have six players representing the country’s top-flight at UEFA EURO 2020, matched by Marco Asensio, Dani Ceballos, Carlos Soler, and a host of other star players. Despite such powerful players, the Spaniards in the group stage at the Olympics could only score one victory. It was over Australia with a minimum score of 1:0, and Egypt and Argentina had to share points, 0:0 and 1:1, respectively, which did not prevent them from taking first place in Group C.
It’s not every year that the Ivorian national team appears at the Olympics. Still, they also brought a solid squad to Tokyo, with players from both UEFA, Fiorentina, and AC Milan. In the first leg, Soualiho Haidara’s charges beat Saudi Arabia 2-1 before sharing points with such high-profile opponents as Brazil and Germany 0-0 and 1-1 respectively, which allowed them to leave Group D in second place. In their current form, the Elephants are poised to pull off a major football tournament sensation by battling for medals.
La Roja picked up five points and scored just two goals as they emerged from a group with Argentina, Egypt and Australia.
Ivory Coast meanwhile have a number of senior internationals of their own and could pose Spain a stern test after knocking out Germany in the group stage.
The Elephants finished second behind Brazil but, like the Spaniards, came through their group unbeaten on five points.
And that is the exact predicament in what Spanish midfielder Pedri currently finds himself in at the moment.
The 18-year-old has participated in a whopping 70 games for club and country since September 2020 which includes a debut in Spain’s under-21 team, La Liga appearances, Champions League run-outs and most recently, representing the senior Spanish team at the Euros.
When Pedri was asked if he knew how many games he has figured in since he stepped onto the main stage, the attacker replied: “I think it’s a very high figure. I don’t really count them.”
Well that figure continues to rise because head coach Luis de la Fuente has placed Pedri in the starting line-up again for the encounter against the Ivorians.
