Manchester City have their eye the top spot in the Premier League this weekend but will have to better Arsenal’s result to knock the Londoners out of first place. Liverpool have endured a poor start to the season and already find themselves 14pts off the league leaders and really need a win on Sunday if they are eventually going to get back into the title race.
Man City actually haven’t won any of their last four games against Liverpool but we’re backing the visitors to claim all 3pts at Anfield. Guardiola’s men have been in great form this season and head into this weekend’s clash as the form favourites with five wins from their last six matches in all competitions. Liverpool have a number of injuries to key first-team players and have lost two of their last six matches in league and cup, including their last Premier League game against Arsenal.
Sunday will be a big test for Erling Haaland as he tries his luck at one of the toughest away grounds in English football. The Norwegian sensation has already scored 15-goals in the Premier League this season in just 9-games, including three hat-tricks. If anyone is going to score against Liverpool this weekend then Haaland is the obvious choice but City need to watch out for Firmino as he is on fire right now.
Liverpool knew they would be in for a tough test last weekend away at Arsenal but it was a test they would ultimately fail. Arsenal scored three times through Martinelli and a brace from Saka and while Liverpool were able to equalise on two occasions through Nunez and Firmino, Arsenal went away with all 3pts and a huge boost in confidence as they look to challenge for the title this season.
As expected, Man City ran out comfortable winners at home to Southampton last time out. Cancelo got the ball rolling in the 20th-minute and Foden added a neat second goal before the break to make it 2-0. Early in the second-half, Mahrez scored after being restored to the starting lineup and in the 65th-minute, Haaland scored his 15th league goal of the campaign to wrap up a 4-0 victory.
An inconsistent Liverpool team will collide against high-flying Manchester City in the Premier League today. Who will come out on top? Keeping in view all the injury concerns, tired players and lack of depth, Reds cannot go toe to toe with the champions and may have to change their usual 4-3-3 formation again. Jurgen Klopp could make four changes to the squad that started in the midweek European contest against Rangers.
The likes of Firmino, Nunez, Jota and Salah impressed in the attack and Klopp should utilize the 4-2-3-1 formation to start the quartet vs the Sky Blues. The Uruguayan striker should start as the lone center forward up front and behind him, in-form Roberto Firmino must start in the No. 10 role. On the right flank, Salah, who scored the fastest hattrick in the history of the Champions League vs the Scottish giants must start on the right flank. On the other hand, Jota, who set up the Egyptian’s goals may feature on the left wing.
In the center of the park, Spanish international, Thiago Alcantara, would return to the starting lineup to partner captain, Jordan Henderson. Konate is a doubt for the game and therefore, it will not come as any surprise to see Fabinho start in the central defense with Virgil van Dijk. Gomez will probably retain his right-back position, however, Robertson should return in place of Kostas Tsimikas to feature in the left-back role.
However, Haaland found the net in his first game against Liverpool while playing for Red Bull Salzburg in October 2019. Liverpool won the game 4-3 but Haaland, who was only 19 at the time, certainly caught the eye at Anfield. Two months later, before the return fixture in Austria, Haaland told a journalist that he would score a hat-trick against the Reds – who were arguably the world’s best team at the time.
Jurgen Klopp is the next manager tasked with the unenviable challenge of thwarting the prolific 22-year-old. The revered German coach has managed to prevent Haaland from scoring against his team on two previous occasions, most-recently in the Community Shield at the start of the season. Haaland has also netted 15 Premier League goals in nine games, including three hat-tricks. Rival Premier League managers were reportedly discussing how to stop City’s 6ft 5in ‘alien’ of a centre-forward back in August and it’s easy to see why.
