Ethiopia vs Egypt – LIVE Reddit Soccer 09/06/2022

Egypt will look to pick up consecutive wins and move into the lead of Group D of the 2023 AFCON qualifiers when they visit the Bingu National Stadium to face Ethiopia on Thursday. The Walia Ibex, on the other hand, head into the game winless in each of their last 11 outings across all competitions and will be looking to end this dry spell. Ethiopia started their quest for a place in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations on the back foot as they suffered a 2-1 defeat away to Malawi on Sunday. Orlando Pirates forward Gabadinho Mhango netted twice from the penalty spot to put the hosts in front heading into half time before Abubeker Nasir pulled one back in the 68th minute.

Wubetu Abate’s men have now failed to taste victory in any of their last 11 games across all competitions, including each of their three games at the AFCON back in January, when they finished rock bottom in Group A with one point from a possible nine. This poor run has been owing to their defensive frailties as they have conceded 18 goals since a 1-0 victory over Zimbabwe back in September 2021, while scoring nine at the opposite end of the pitch. While Ethiopia set out to secure consecutive AFCON appearances, next up is the challenge of an opposing side who are unbeaten in each of their last eight encounters, claiming six wins and two draws since a 1-0 loss back in 1989.

Egypt, on the other hand, were forced to work their socks off in Sunday’s group opener against Guinea as they scrapped a narrow 1-0 victory on home turf. In a cagey affair at the Cairo International Stadium, Galatasaray forward Mostafa Mohamed came up clutch for the Pharaohs as he scored an 89th-minute winner to see off the Syli National. Prior to that, Egypt saw their hopes of reaching the forthcoming World Cup come to an end as they suffered a gruesome penalty shootout defeat at the hands of Senegal back in March’s qualification playoff. Ehab Galal’s side, who were also beaten on penalties by Senegal in the AFCON final earlier this year, are eyeing their 26th appearance at the continental showpiece. Their last title triumph came back in 2010, when they claimed a 1-0 victory over West-African giants Ghana courtesy of an 85th-minute strike from Mohamed Nagy.

Mohamed Salah| The star of the Pharaohs is ‘touched’, but he could see minutes in this match since, despite his condition, he played the last match against Guinea where he was very participative. The Liverpool striker is one of the most talented strikers up front and with his ability to hit from medium range, he can be a headache for the Ethiopian national team.

The Ethiopian goalkeeper could be key in this match as he faces one of the teams that has a lot of talent in the offensive line. Faced with such power, Shanko could be very important with the interventions he can have under his goal, so he will have to be at his best and prevent the Egyptian goals.

The reigning runners-up of the African Cup of Nations, led by Ehab Galal, are one of the most powerful and most visible teams in their confederation. With a star player like Salah, the Pharaohs are the favorites in the group they share with Ethiopia, Malawi and Guinea. The Egyptians started the qualifiers on the right foot and recorded their first victory in this tournament against Guinea, where a solitary goal by Mostafa Mohamed in the 87th minute gave them the three points on the first matchday.

Despite the huge differences between these two national teams, both share similar results when it comes to goals – most games have less than 2.5 goals. While Egypt are on a decline, we do not expect them to overdo themselves and score more than 1-2 goals. Ethiopia have been scoring goals in absolutely all of their recent matches but those were mostly friendly games against weak national teams. We expect a minimal win for Egypt.

We think that Egypt will get another 1:0 win in this second fixture of the qualifications. Ethiopia haver not won a match in seven consecutive games and overall not a single win this year. Egypt have been having problems – the team lost the Africa Cup of Nations title to Senegal and then lost the qualification for the world cup – against Senegal again. The team will be motivated for good results and we expect an easy win for the Egyptians.

We think that Egypt will find a way to keep a clean sheet in this match. The team has a solid defense but often struggles to score. On the other end, most of Ethiopia’s recent matches had both teams scoring goals but almost none of their games were against teams of Egypt’s level. We think that Egypt will be the much stronger team in this match and Ethiopia will not have a lot of chances to score overall.

Ethiopia’s current squad cannot compare to the top teams that perform in the Africa Cup of Nations. None of the teams’ players perform at the top levels of European football or nowhere near that level. This is a side that has been having issues for years and we do not expect them to achieve anything in this group, especially after the defeat at the start.

Egypt have been one of the top teams in Africa ever since Mohamed Salah rose to fame. Beside him, however, there are few players that perform at the very top of the football world – apart from Mohamed Elneny from Arsenal, Salah is the only star. The team suffered several consecutive defeats from Senegal that cost them the World Cup, so we expect extra motivation from them here.
