Chelsea vs Newcastle – LIVE Reddit Soccer 13/03/2022

Chelsea will be looking to make it five Premier League victories in a row when they welcome an in-form Newcastle United to Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon. The Blues will enter the contest off the back of a 3-1 win over Norwich City on Thursday, while Newcastle continued their excellent form on the same night with a 2-1 success at Southampton. There is a lot of uncertainty at Chelsea at the moment, with the club facing a change of ownership, while the capital giants have been hit with a number of restrictions due to the UK government sanctions against current owner Roman Abramovich.

Head coach Thomas Tuchel and the players can only control matters on the field, though, and the Blues put their issues aside on Thursday evening to record a 3-1 victory over Norwich, which made it four straight wins in England’s top flight and strengthened their control of third position. Chelsea have collected 56 points from their 27 league games this term, which has left them eight points clear of fourth-placed Arsenal in the table, although the Gunners have two matches in hand on their capital rivals.

The Blues lost to Liverpool in the final of the EFL Cup at the end of February, but they progressed in the FA Cup with a 3-2 success at Luton Town earlier this month, while the club are in a strong position to reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League, having recorded a 2-0 win over Lille in the first leg of their last-16 tie. Tuchel’s side have the second-best away record in the Premier League this season, but they have been held on five occasions in front of their own supporters, and it remains to be seen what kind of atmosphere will greet the players on Sunday, with the London giants going through a period of huge uncertainty.

Newcastle will be looking to take advantage of any issues that crop up for the home side this weekend, with the Magpies transforming their form in recent weeks to move away from the relegation zone. Eddie Howe’s side are unbeaten in the Premier League since December 19, winning six of their last seven matches in England’s top flight, including a 2-1 success at Southampton on Thursday night.

Newcastle were in serious relegation trouble towards the end of last year but are now up in 14th position in the table, 10 points clear of the bottom three, while they are only four points behind 10th-placed Southampton with a game in hand, which is an extraordinary turn of events considering their troubles. Howe’s team will head to Stamford Bridge full of confidence, particularly as they have picked up 10 points from their last four away matches in the Premier League, but the Magpies have lost their last three Premier League games to Chelsea without scoring a single goal, including a 3-0 reverse earlier this season.

Newcastle have also not beaten Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the league since May 2012, but the Blues have been held by Everton, Brighton & Hove Albion and Liverpool in three of their last four top-flight games at home.

Chelsea are the big favourites to beat Newcastle in the Premier League this weekend but the hosts have a big match coming up in the Champions League which could take the majority of their focus, while the Magpies arrive in great form and Eddie Howe has his players putting in consistently good performances at the moment.

We’re going against the odds and backing Newcastle to secure a win or a draw on Sunday despite the fact that the Magpies have only won one of their last four encounters with Chelsea. Chelsea have only lost one of their last six matches in all competitions and that was on penalties in the League Cup final but Newcastle have secured five wins and one draw from their last six league games. Off the field issues could also cause an issue for Chelsea this weekend, while Newcastle will be fully focused and looking to exploit any opportunities the home side present.

In midweek, Chelsea made the trip to Norwich looking to secure the 3pts they needed to keep the pressure on Liverpool and Man City above them. It only took 3-minutes for Chalobah to put Chelsea in front and with 14-minutes on the clock, Mount made it 2-0. In the second half, Norwich pulled a goal back via a Pukki penalty but in the last minute of the game, Havertz scored to wrap up a 3-1 win for the visitors.

Newcastle made the trip to Southampton on Thursday night but fell behind in the 25th-minute. However, Chris Wood equalised for the visitors just after the half-hour mark, with Shelvey claiming an assist, and in the second half, Guimaraes scored his first goal for the Magpies and Eddie Howe’s men held on to secure yet another impressive win.

Even as the club continues to deal with the fallout from the UK Government sanctioning Roman Abramovich, Chelsea will look to focus on the matters on the pitch when they lock horns with Newcastle United at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

Chelsea find themselves in a state of turmoil following the sanctions against their owner, which has left the club in a precarious position with regard to their immediate future. The Blues have seen their sponsors suspend agreements due to the sanctions. They have also had to stop new ticket sales, and have had their credit line frozen by Barclays, leaving them in a lurch.

Amidst this crisis, the onus will be on Thomas Tuchel to ensure that his players remain focused on the task at hand and consolidate their position in the top four. The Blues head into Sunday’s contest on the back of a 3-1 victory over Norwich City, which was their fourth win in a row in the Premier League. Chelsea currently have a firm grip on third place, sitting ten points behind Liverpool in second and eight clear of fourth-placed Arsenal.

Newcastle United, meanwhile, are one of the most in-form teams in the Premier League, having not lost a single one of their last nine league matches. Coming into the weekend’s set of fixtures, only Liverpool have collected more points than the Magpies in 2022. Eddie Howe’s side have won each of their previous three matches, most recently defeating Southampton 2-1 to rise to 14th place in the standings, ten points clear of the drop zone.

The reverse fixture ended 3-0 in favour of Chelsea, courtesy of a second-half brace from Reece James and a Jorginho penalty. However, Newcastle will hope to make the most of the west Londoners’ off-field distractions and extend their unbeaten run on Sunday.
