The Cambodian national football team will face their counterparts from Bangladesh in an international friendly match next month, the Football Federation of Cambodia (FFC) announced.

“The Football Federation of Cambodia is pleased to accept the invitation of the Football Federation of Bangladesh to play in the “MinebeaMitsumi International Friendly”,” the FFC announcement said. The match is going to be played on September 22 at the Morodok Techo National Stadium in Phnom Penh. It will be staged after an earlier attempt to pair the two sides failed, apparently due to the Covid-19 pandemic. In April, the FFC declined an invitation from the BFF to send the Cambodian team to Bangladesh for a friendly game.

At the time, the Bangladesh national team was preparing for their group stage campaign in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Asian Cup 2023 qualifiers. ‘Cambodia are not coming, considering all of the aspects relating to the tour to Bangladesh, including the Covid-19 situation,” BFF General-Secretary Abu Nayeem Shohag said. “They preferred to play a neighbouring country.”

Cambodia ended up playing an international friendly match against Timor-Leste on their home pitch two months ago. The game against Timor-Leste, which ended in a 2-1 for the Angkor Warriors, was the first international friendly for Cambodia since the start of the pandemic. A planned friendly against the Philippine team also failed to materialise due to concerns related to the pandemic, local media reported. This will be the fourth time for the two sides to face each other, with Bangladesh winning a trio of close matches. The remaining game ended in a draw, according to 11v11, a website that keeps track of international football statistics.

Bangladesh beat Cambodia, 2-1, in the AFC Challenge Cup in 2006, and also won in a couple of friendly matches in 2009 and 2019, both by scores of 1-0. In their previous four meetings, Bangladesh beat Cambodia three times while the other one ended in a draw. Bangladesh beat Cambodia 2-1 in the AFC Challenge Cup in 2006 before a 1-1 draw in the Nehru Cup in India in 2007. Bangladesh won the two friendly matches against Cambodia with an identical 1-0 margin in 2009 and 2019 respectively. After completing their campaign in Cambodia, Bangladesh are scheduled to fly to Kathmandu to play another FIFA friendly against Nepal on September 27.
