Five days later it was off to Taiwan, where the green and gold visitors ran riot in a 7-1 thrashing of Chinese Taipei. Adam Taggart ensured his name was firmly in the forwards conversation with two goals, as Jackson Irvine also found the net twice and Souttar bagged ANOTHER brace. Substitute Ajdin Hrustic arguably stole the show with three assists, something he’ll no doubt be keen to add to in the coming weeks. Then, on the 15th of November 2019, the Socceroos claimed a slim 1-0 win in Jordan, Adam Taggart’s 13th minute goal the only Australian shot on target in a tough victory.

The two third-placed nations face off for a spot in a playoff against a nation from another continental confederation. It was that do-or-die pathway that saw the Socceroos beat Syria before facing Honduras for a spot in the 2018 World Cup in Russia – and coach Graham Arnold will be hoping to avoid needing play-offs to book a ticket to Qatar this time around.

On a brief sidenote, if the Socceroos do progress to the next stage either as group winners or as one of the best four runners-up, they will also book a place in the 2023 Asian Cup to be held in China.

If Australia fails to qualify for the third stage of World Cup qualifying, they will also be forced into another stage of qualifiers for the Asian Cup itself.

In the third and final stage of World Cup qualification, 12 countries will be split into two groups of six (the draw will take place on 24 June 2021, based on a system of seedings based on country’s FIFA world rankings).

Each team will play the other five sides from its group twice between September and March. The top two teams from each group advance to the World Cup.
