Arsenal host Leeds United in the top flight for the first time since 2004 on Sunday, with just one point and one place separating the two sides in the Premier League table. Those days will feel like a lifetime ago for Arsenal fans, who now sit behind Leeds heading into what is the definition of a mid-table battle. The Gunners’ recent resurgence has hit a brick wall with back-to-back defeats against Wolverhampton Wanderers and Aston Villa ending a run which had seen them pick up 17 of the 21 points on offer prior to that. A 1-0 defeat at Villa Park last weekend means that only the league’s bottom four have failed to score in more games than Arsenal’s nine this season, and their form does not bode well heading into a potential season-defining period.
Arsenal go into battle without the services of Thomas Partey, who Mikel Arteta said is “devastated” to miss out with the injury he sustained at Aston Villa. Partey’s career at the Emirates has been frustratingly stop-start to date and there is a further headache in the form of Kieran Tierney’s continued absence. Arteta hopes to see a swift recovery from consecutive defeats that he feels Arsenal did not deserve; if Leeds miss their own midfield lynchpin, the doubtful Kalvin Phillips, their cause
It’s back to the drawing board for Arsenal and boss Mikel Arteta. The Gunners have now dropped two on the spin in the Premier League, and have won just two in their last six league fixtures. After a period of growth that saw them post a 5-2-0 record in a seven-match undefeated run that began on Boxing Day and ended with dreaded Wolves loss, the north London outfit remain frustrating in the final third.
Their performances at the back deserve plenty of praise, boasting a defensive record that is second-best in the division and well-clear of Manchester United and Liverpool while being as stout as Leicester City and Chelsea. But like a handful of sides sitting much lower in the table than Arsenal, goals are at a premium for the thirteen-time champions of England, yet they do not have the luxury of excusing their failings on the back of a lack of quality.
Arsenal have blown hot and cold all through the 2020/21 season, having started off on a strong note before encountering a rut. There was some brief respite at the end of December and going into the new year, when the Gunners went on a seven-game unbeaten run. February though, has started on a dire note for Mikel Arteta’s men, who have lost each of their last two games, meaning they are 11th on the table heading into this weekend.
Leeds United, on the other hand, are a place ahead of their hosts in the standings, but have been very inconsistent over the course of the season. The same has been the case in 2021 so far as well, with Marcelo Bielsa & co. winning three and losing four of their seven games this year, although their most recent outing was a clinical 2-0 win over Crystal Palace.
